Red Cloud Project
Professor Randy Brown
This vertical studio was taught by Randy Brown at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. The intent was to create development proposals for the town of Red Cloud, Nebraska. This small town faces the same challenges all small towns in Nebraska are up against; population flight, hard economic times and sole reliance on agriculture. Red Cloud is unique in that it has many culturally significant buildings and significant people. Willa Cather grew up in Red Cloud and based many of her books on the people and events of the town.
The studio spent 4 weeks intensely researching Red Cloud’s history, built environment and people. With an understanding of how the city grew and how it operates today, the students were given the task to propose new types of developments for Red Cloud. 14 projects were proposed and designed. These projects were presented to the town of Red Cloud and were exhibited in the local art gallery.
